چکیده

Stochastic discrete event simulation methodology is becoming increasingly popular among network researchers around the world in recent years. This is partly because of the availability of various sophisticated and powerful simulation software packages, but also because of the flexibility in model construction and validation. This paper describes our experience in using the ns-2 network simulator, a discrete event simulation package, as an aid to modeling and simulation of the IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLANs). The paper concludes by discussing the strengths and weaknesses of simulation methodology in general, and the ns-2 in particular.

Effective Capacity Theory for Modeling Systems with Time-Varying Servers, with an Application to IEEE 802.11 WLANs

Many network applications rely on stochastic QoS guarantees. With respect to loss-related performance, the Effective Bandwidth/Capacity theory has proved useful for calculating loss probabilities in queues with complex inputand server-processes and for formulating simple admission control tests to ensure associated QoS guarantees. This success has motivated the application of the theory for del...

Performance Study of IEEE 802.11b Wireless LAN under High Traffic Conditions

The IEEE 802.11b medium access control (MAC) protocol is gaining widespread popularity as a layer-2 protocol for wireless local area networks (WLANs). A good MAC protocol for WLANs should provide an efficient mechanism to share a limited wireless channel bandwidth, together with high bandwidth utilization and fairness in serving all stations. In this paper we study the performance of IEEE 802.1...

State Dependent Attempt Rate Modeling of Single Cell IEEE~802.11 WLANs with Homogeneous Nodes and Poisson Packet Arrivals

Analytical models for IEEE 802.11-based WLANs are invariably based on approximations, such as the well-known decoupling approximation proposed by Bianchi for modeling single cell WLANs consisting of saturated nodes. In this paper, we provide a new approach to model the situation when the nodes are not saturated. We study a State Dependent Attempt Rate (SDAR) approximation to model M queues (one...

An Energy-Aware WLAN Discovery Scheme for LTE HetNet

Recently, there has been significant interest in the integration and co-existence of Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution (LTE) with other Radio Access Technologies, like IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). Although, the inter-working of IEEE 802.11 WLANs with 3GPP LTE has indicated enhanced network performance in the context of capacity and load balanci...
